Can't accept a Slack Connect invitation? Here's why and how to fix it
Why a Slack Connect invitation cannot be accepted, and how to fix it from each side: the person invited, the sender and the admins.
By The Follow Up Bot team
When a Slack Connect invitation will not go through, the cause is nearly always a setting on one side, not a bug. The hard part is knowing which side, because the person who sees the problem is often not the one who can fix it. This guide matches the symptoms to their causes and says who can unstick each one. For the basics of shared channels, start with our guide to Slack Connect.
The usual causes
Start with what you see, then work out whose settings are involved.
| What you see | Likely cause | Who can fix it |
|---|---|---|
| No invitation arrived | Wrong or personal email address, or a spam filter | The sender |
| You cannot click Accept | Your admins restrict who can accept | Your Slack owner or admin |
| Accepted, but the channel never appears | An admin on your side or theirs has to approve it | Admins on either side |
| Asked to upgrade or start a trial | Your workspace is on a free plan | Your Slack owner |
| The invitation has disappeared | A colleague accepted it, or the sender revoked it | Check with your team or the sender |
If you were invited
Look for the invitation in Slack itself, not just in your email. On desktop, open Home, click Directories, then External, where pending invitations are listed. If you do not see Directories, look for External connections in the sidebar.
If you cannot accept, your company may limit who is allowed to. Slack notes that owners and admins can restrict who can accept invitations, and the fix is to ask one of them to accept it or give you permission. If the invitation went to several people at your company, only one person needs to accept it, so check whether a colleague already has.
Accepting is not always the last step. Your admins may need to approve Slack Connect invitations you accept, and until they do, the channel will not appear. A day of silence after you click Accept almost always means an approval is waiting.
If your company has more than one workspace, Slack asks which workspace the channel should join when you accept. Pick the one where the people who will work with this customer already are. Otherwise the channel lands somewhere your colleagues never look, and it can seem as if the invitation failed.
If you are offered an upgrade or a trial instead of a channel, the cause is your plan. When your workspace is not on a paid Slack plan, Slack offers an upgrade or a free trial before you can join. Talk to whoever owns your Slack account before starting a trial, so it does not lapse unnoticed.
If you sent the invitation
First, check the address. An invitation to a personal email, a shared inbox or an old address will never reach someone who can accept it. Ask your contact for the email they use to sign in to Slack at work. Then tell them the invitation is on its way and who it is from, on a call or by email. An unexpected message from Slack is easy to mistake for spam, and a short heads-up can save a day.
Next, check your own side. Your admins may need to approve invitations you send, in which case nothing reaches the other company until they do. If the address was wrong, revoke the invitation while it is still pending and send a new one. Our guide on how to create an external Slack channel walks through the invitation settings step by step.
If you are an admin
Approvals are controlled in one place. Workspace owners and admins can adjust approval settings, including who approves requests and when approval is required. When approval is on, owners and admins review each invitation request under Tools & settings, in Manage Slack Connect Invitations.
If you work with the same partner often, consider custom settings for them. Admins can set automatic approval and acceptance for specific organizations, so invitations from a trusted customer stop waiting in a queue. When requests pile up, you can approve or deny them in bulk.
A message to unstick it
The quickest fix is usually a short, specific message to your contact at the other company. It tells them exactly what to ask their admin for.
Hi Priya, I sent a Slack Connect invitation to #ext-northwind yesterday. It's waiting for approval on your side.Could you ask your Slack admin to approve it? They'll find it under Tools & settings, Manage Slack Connect Invitations, Open requests.
Workarounds while you wait
If the channel is blocked for days, you still have options. A Slack Connect DM can work when channels cannot, because DM settings are separate. For a freelancer or a short project, a guest account may be simpler; our comparison of Slack Connect and guest accounts explains the trade-offs.
Finally, if invitations fail for everyone at once, check Slack's status page before you change any settings. Slack has had incidents where invitations could not be accepted at all, and no setting will fix those. Once the channel works, our Slack Connect guide covers running it well.
Questions people ask
Questions people ask
Why can't I accept a Slack Connect invite?
Usually because your Slack owners or admins restrict who can accept invitations, or because they must approve the invitation first. Ask an owner or admin to accept it or approve it.
I accepted the invitation. Why can't I see the channel?
An admin on your side or the other company's side probably has to approve it. The channel appears once every required approval is done.
Do I need a paid Slack plan to accept?
Accepting is free for eligible workspaces, but if your workspace is on a free plan, Slack may ask you to upgrade or start a trial before you can join a shared channel.
The invitation disappeared. What happened?
Either someone else at your company accepted it, since only one person needs to, or the sender revoked it. Check with your team, then ask the sender to resend if needed.
Can admins approve invitations from a trusted partner automatically?
Yes. Workspace owners and admins can set custom automatic approval and acceptance for specific organizations, so invitations from that partner do not wait for review.
